Thattekad is one of the several scenic tourist spots in Kerala and is known for its bird sanctuary, which is the main tourist attraction. Anyone interested in birds is bound to love a visit to Thattekad, for the general visitor, this place will give an opportunity to see over 200 varieties of rare species of birds, home in their natural environment. The bird sanctuary in Thattekad is also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, in honour of Dr. Salim Ali, who was instrumental in bringing it to the limelight. Dr. Ali had described Thattekad as one of finest bird habitats in India, and recommended that it be notified as a sanctuary. Dr. Ali's recommendation was accepted nearly fifty years after it was made and Thattekad was notified as a bird sanctuary in 1983. The sanctuary is located on the banks of the Periyar River in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. Thattekad consists of tropical evergreen forests, tropical semi-evergreen forests and tropical deciduous forests, providing an ambience for stay that takes the visitor close to nature.
